Suad Amiry and Susan Abulhawa: In Conversation

Monday October 19, 2015
6:30-8:30 PM
Location TBD
Palestinian architect and author Suad Amiry and Palestinian American writer and human rights activist Susan Abulhawa will discuss their newly published books within a broader conversation around contemporary Palestinian literature.

Amiry's newly published Gold Slept Here traces the lives of individual members of Palestinian families and, through them, the histories of both Palestine and the emigre Palestinian community in other countries of the Middle East.

Abulhawa's novel, The Blue Between Sky and Water is a story of powerful, flawed women; of relocation, separation and heartache; of renewal, family, endurance, and love.

Suad Amiry is an author and also an architect living in the West Bank city of Ramallah. She studied architecture at the American University of Beirut, the University of Michigan, and the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. Her parents went from Palestine to Amman, Jordan. When she returned to Ramallah as a tourist in 1981, she met Salim Tamari, whom she married later, and stayed. Her book Sharon and My Mother-in-Law has been translated into 19 languages, which was a bestseller in France, and was awarded in 2004 the prestigious Viareggio Prize in Italy. She is Director and founder of the Riwaq Centre for Architectural Conservation, the center was founded in 1991; the first of its kind to work on the rehabilitation and protection of architectural heritage in Palestine.

Susan Abulahawa was born to Palestinian refugees from Jerusalem, where her family had lived for centuries. Susan is a human rights activist currently living in Pennsylvania, USA, with her daughter. She is a frequent political commentator and she is the founder of Playgrounds for Palestine, a children's organization dedicated to upholding the Right to Play for Palestinian children living under

Wednesdays at 6:45 pm

August 19        Above and Beyond

In 1948, a group of World War II pilots volunteered to fight for Israel in the War of Independence. As members of 'Machal' -- volunteers from abroad -- this ragtag band of brothers not only turned the tide of the war, preventing the possible annihilation of Israel at the very moment of its birth; they also laid the groundwork for the Israeli Air Force. ABOVE AND BEYOND is their story. The first major feature-length documentary about the foreign airmen in the War of Independence, ABOVE AND BEYOND brings together new interviews with pilots from the '48 War, as well as leading scholars and statesmen, including Shimon Peres, to present an extraordinary, little-known tale with reverberations up to the present day.

Reel Israel is sponsored by the Adult Education Committee.
A committee member will lead discussion after each film.

All are welcome.
We provide air conditioning, soft drinks, and snacks! Join us!

India-Israel Innovation & Entrepreneurship in Healthcare & Lifesciences

Thursday morning:
India-Israel Innovation & Entrepreneurship in Healthcare & Lifesciences
On 17 September 1950, India announced recognition of Israel. Soon after India’s recognition of Israel, the Jewish Agency established an immigration office in Bombay. This was soon converted into a Trade Office and later a Consulate. Following the fall of the Soviet Union, India decided to establish diplomatic relations, Israel opened its Embassy in Delhi in February 1992 and India opened its Embassy in Tel Aviv in May 1992. Since then, warm relations have developed and a rapid growth across a broad spectrum has occurred.

On Passover we are commanded to retell the story of Moses leading the Israelites from slavery in Egypt to freedom in the Promised Land. When Moses led the Hebrew slaves out of Egypt, he catalyzed the birth of a nation. Every year on Seder night, we recount the great miracle of Exodus. Long before becoming God’s messenger, Moses killed an Egyptian taskmaster who was beating a Hebrew slave.

You are hereby summoned to fulfill your civic duty as a juror for a trial of epic proportions… The People vs. Moses.  Join us for a unique event that brings together biblical scholarship and courtroom drama as we explore Moses’ guilt or innocence.

The trial begins with a text study. You will then enter the “courtroom” where Dan Abrams and Alan Dershowitz will serve, respectively, as prosecutor and defense attorney. The trial will be presided over by The Honorable Judge Alison J. Nathan. And then, ladies and gentlemen of the jury, you will cast your votes.

The Temple Emanu-El Skirball Centerstrives to create new Jewish experiences with compelling classes, seminars and special events to challenge, inspire and entertain. One East 65th Street | New York, NY 10065 www.emanuelskirballnyc.org
